Understanding skin tags: Benign growths on the skin

If you've ever noticed a small patch of dangling skin on your body, it's most likely a skin tag. Although these small growths are completely harmless, they are a nuisance for some people.

Skin tags (acrochordons) are small, non-cancerous growths that are usually the same color as your skin. They often look like a collection of skin tissue spreading from a tiny stalk. Sometimes they are darker in color and may resemble a raised mole. Most skin tags are between 1 and 5 mm in size, but some can grow up to a few centimeters. According to clinical research from the American Academy of Dermatology, people with warts, moles and skin tags are more prone to developing actinic keratosis and follicular keratosis.

Skin tags and warts are common growths of skin cells. Skin tags develop when additional cells grow on the surface of the skin. They form when the skin rubs against each other. People who are overweight, obese, pregnant or have sagging skin have a higher risk of developing skin tags.
